Follow scenic highways and wide country roads across the Riverina on an artistic journey of discovery. Linking the thriving cities of Wagga Wagga and Griffith to pretty towns and villages, the Riverina Outdoor Art Trail is a growing collection of impressive murals and sculptures.
The stunning Weethalle Silo mural captures the very essence of the local community. Located along the Newell Highway and featured on a limited edition stamp by Australia Post, the artwork depicting a shearer and a grain farmer draws visitors from across the world.
The magnificent Narrandera Water Tower mural at reflects the connection of the land and the people to our water ways. A giant koala, bearded lizard, historic landmarks and Wiradjuri symbols are intricately linked to the mighty Murrumbidgee River in this recently completed artwork.
Rising high above the town’s historic skyline, the stunning Lockhart Water Tower mural features brolgas soaring above a cascading waterfall surrounded by native fauna and flora from the local landscape. The town is also home to more than 30 artistic farm art sculptures.
To the east of the Newell, further sculptures abound. In Ariah Park, the Wheat Lumper statue pays homage to the wheat lumping era, while the story of Boofhead the Dog, immortalised in a bronze replica at Temora Rail Station tells a warm and endearing story, so renaissance of days gone by.
The Captains Walk in Cootamundra immortalises Australia’s cricketing heros while Gundagai is home to one of the most iconic landmarks in Australia, the Dog on the Tuckerbox. A lesser known story but one of courage is the $210,000 bronze statue in Gungagai Main Street depicting The Great Rescue.
Cadell Place in Wagga Wagga showcases works by Australian mural artists Keo Match, Ling, Reuben Broughtwood and Ignacio Querejeta while the Willan Hills Water Tower mural features a light hearted impression of local school children.
The Big Tennis Racquet in Barellan standing 13.8m tall represents the towns proud association with Evonne Goolagong-Cawley MBE AO. Travel on to Leeton to discover the Lyrics, Landscapes and Lintels artworks celebrating the rich local heritage.
In the beautiful city of Griffith, the Banna Lane murals celebrate the city’s diverse heritage and people, while the Centenary Stone Sculptures, carved by world renowned sculptors, line the pathways of IOOT Park.
Coleambally Water Tower is one of the most unusual of its kind. Shaped like a wine glass, the mosaic stories at the base tell the pictorial history of the town. Further south, a visit to Jerilderie will have you reaching for the air as you encounter the Ned Kelly statue.
Follow us on our journey as the Riverina Outdoor Art Trail continues to grow, with further silo and water tower murals commissioned for the coming months.
